Dialogue between cities: mutual support and future plans
Brovary Mayor Igor Sapozhko began a meeting with the words of gratitude and expressed his hope that community cooperation will continue in the future: “I hope that our meetings will continue in the future.” He emphasized the importance of the help that the community receives: “Thank you for the cooperation we have because you helped us a lot. These are the things that we need critically.”
For his part, Erlangen Mayor Florian Yanik stressed that the city continues to support Ukraine and Brovary. “Not only I, but the whole population support Ukraine sincerely, understand our needs. Willingness to help is very great,” said Erlangen Mayor.
Igor Sapozhko added that the partnership between cities has not only a practical but also a moral dimension: “Our cooperation, our friendship is development and vocation, not only development between communities.”
Brovarsky mayor also told colleagues about the security situation in the community, in particular the consequences of firing of Brovary by the Russian army.
In addition, the parties discussed assistance to internally displaced persons. “Today we have 22.5 thousand people who, unfortunately, have already lost their home in the state,” Igor Sapozhko said.
Florian Yanik emphasized the activity of Erlangen residents in raising funds to assist the brewery community. “There are many people who are ready to take different promotions. And this is not only a raising of funds that are happening constantly and transferred to Ukraine. But people offer assistance at different levels on their own,” he said.
Igor Sapozhko has promised to prepare a list of needs in the community today. On educational cooperation, he added: “Schools are constantly in need of help. Unfortunately, we are so learning that we constantly need shelter. This is both furniture and personal support of each other’s students. We would like our children to tell and show what we have, what is happening, After all, the war is a terrible story that we are experiencing today.
The issue of transport was also raised. According to the Brovarsky Mayor, the community needs several buses, even used to open a city route.
Believe me, all the help provided by Erlangen, it is really significant and needed. And at a difficult point when there were some problems with the possibility of financing, or with electricity interruptions, or the work of utility companies, and what we received, made it possible for us to function and work. Therefore, our community is grateful to the city of Erlangen, the residents for not standing aside from our problems. And this collaboration is needed for our population, they know each other, knew about the situation and in principle developed friendship
The parties expressed the hope that in May this year, delegations from Erlangen will be able to visit the Brovar community.
Ukrainian-German cooperation: strategic partnership
The cooperation between Brovary and Erlangen began in the summer of 2022 with a video of community representatives. Erlangen accepted more than 1600 refugees from Ukraine, including Brovary residents.
One of the first significant projects was the purchase of medical equipment for the hospital in the amount of more than UAH 3.9 million. In 2023, the community received 9 units of specialized equipment, including resuscitation and fire trucks.
In addition to humanitarian assistance, cultural exchange is developing. A number of educational initiatives were organized, including the exchange of photographs between students and joint sports events.
The communal sphere is also the focus. In August 2023, an online meeting of representatives of water supply enterprises of both cities took place, which was the first step to technical cooperation.
Thus, the partnership between cities continues to develop and bring specific results in various spheres of community life.
