Details: Starmer emphasized the need to consolidate the efforts of European allies to support Ukraine in the face of expected changes in US policy after the inauguration of Donald Trump.

He emphasized that Great Britain is ready to play a key role in peace initiatives, in particular, the possibility of a peacekeeping mission with the participation of British troops is being considered.

Starmer also emphasized the importance of increasing military aid to Ukraine by all European countries. According to him, this will allow President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate with Russia from the strongest position.

“I think collectively we have to do more. I think the whole of Europe recognizes that,” Starmer said. He emphasized that right now European countries should show their responsibility to Ukraine and demonstrate unity in countering aggression.

Starmer said he did not seek to tell other countries “what they should and shouldn’t do,” adding that he considered himself a “political collaborationist.” At the same time, he emphasized that the world is “in a different context from the point of view of conflicts all over the world.”

The Prime Minister expressed concern about possible changes in the US approach to supporting Ukraine after the return of Donald Trump to the White House. In particular, Trump’s candidate for the position of Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that both sides of the conflict will have to compromise.

Prehistory:

  • During a press conference on January 16 in Kyiv, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that this year Britain has already allocated 3 billion pounds (about $3.6 billion) for military aid to Ukraine.
  • It should be noted that on this day Ukraine and Great Britain signed a historic agreement on a 100-year partnership to deepen security ties and strengthen the partnership for future generations.
  • On January 9, it was reported that Great Britain, together with its NATO allies, will hand over 30,000 new drones to Ukraine.
  • On the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron and Starmer met at the British prime minister’s country residence, Ukraine being the central topic of their conversation.
