Details: At a press conference on Thursday in the afternoon, British Prime Minister, Kir Starmer, confirmed the signing with the Mauritius Agreement on the Chos Archipelago, which temporarily blocked the decision of the Judge of the High Court of England.

The ban was announced in response to a lawsuit of two women from the Chagos people who represent the indigenous inhabitants of the islands, evicted several decades ago to free up space for the US base.

After a few hours, however, another judge canceled the ban by unlocking the signing of the agreement.

Back in October 2024, Britain agreed to convey the Mauritius Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, on the largest of which is the strategically important naval base and the base of Diego-Harcia bombers.

Under the terms of the signed agreement, Britain will then rent a database for a term of at least 99 years (which can be extended for another 40 years) for £ 101 million per year.

In addition, Britain will finance Chegoss development programs and will have a “full responsibility” for the defense and safety of Diego-Harcia’s base.

The Chos Islands have been under the control of Great Britain since 1814. Britain separated the islands from Mauritius in 1965, three years before the Mauritic Independence.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Britain evicted about two thousand people from the islands so that the US military could build a Diego-Harcia base that supported US military operations from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The UK’s opposition Conservative Party has criticized the Labor Government’s decision to convey the Mavrikia Claiming Archipelago of Chagos.
