Bolsonar was found guilty of preparing a coup, participation in an armed criminal organization, an attempt to abolish the democratic system of Brazil, commit violent actions against government agencies and damage state property during the storm of governmental buildings on January 8, 2023.
The part of the coup plan, according to prosecutors, was a plan of potential use of explosives, military weapons or poison to kill the left President Luis Inasio Lula da Silva, his Vice President Geraldo Alkmin and the Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
The 70-year-old Bolsonar and other defendants denied their guilt. Lawyers can still appeal.
