BOLOGNA: PRESENTATION OF THE TEAM
This is Bologna’s first season in the Champions League, but not the first in the most prestigious European competition. In the 1964/65 season, in the preliminary round of the Champions Cup, the Italian team played three matches with the Belgian Anderlecht. First, Bologna lost away – 0:1, then won at home – 2:1, in a replay on a neutral field (Camp Nou) was recorded as a draw — 0:0. Since there was no penalty shootout at that time, a draw had to be made and Anderlecht went on to win.
The most successful European Cup season for Bologna was in 1998/99. Then the team reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. In the matches with Marseille, a draw was recorded twice – 0:0, 1:1, but thanks to an away goal, the French advanced.
It is interesting that Bologna has never lost at home in European Cups, with 15 wins in 23 matches.
Bologna became the champion of Italy seven times (last time in 1964). In the 2023/24 season, the team finished fifth in Serie A, which enabled them to qualify for the Champions League.

In the current Italian championship, Bologna played four matches without a win, drawing with Udinese (1:1), Empoli (1:1) and Como (2:2), and also losing to Napoli – 0:3.
New format
The Champions League is completely changing its format from this season. The tournament was expanded from 32 to 36 teams and the group stage was removed.
There will be one table for all teams. Each team will play eight matches. Moreover, all games will be played against different opponents. Four matches at home, four away.
The final table is formed based on the results of eight rounds. The top 8 teams immediately go to the 1/8 finals. Clubs ranked from 9th to 24th place play head-to-head matches for the right to enter the 1/8 finals. The teams ranked below leave the European Cups. There will no longer be a transition to the Europa League at the main stage.
