The cost of the contract was about 640 billion Rs, or $ 7.4 billion. The agreement provides for the supply of 22 single combat aircraft and four double training versions.
France will also provide maintenance for 36 Rafale fighters, which India has purchased for its Air Force in 2016.
Bloomberg states that new planes will be based on the domestic aircraft carrier of the Navy of India INS VIKRANT. Now on the second aircraft carrier, the Ins Vikramaditya is served by old Russian MiG-29K fighters that already need replacement.
According to the publication, the acquisition of French Rafale will greatly strengthen India’s position against the backdrop of a growing rivalry with China in a strategically important region of the Indian Ocean, where the main international trade routes take place.
