Blinken on UN reform: we should live in the modern world, not in the realities of 1945

The United Nations must be transformed into a modern instrument that will correspond to the realities of today, and not to the world model of 1945, when the Organization was founded.

This is how US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken explained the US position regarding the need to reform the UN Security Council, Ukrinform’s own correspondent reports.

“The United States seeks to adapt the UN system so that it reflects the world that exists today and will exist tomorrow, not the one that existed in 1945,” the head of American diplomacy emphasized during a speech at the UN Future Summit.

At the same time, he emphasized that the United States strongly opposes revisionism.

“We will not accept attempts to destroy, weaken or fundamentally change the main principles of the UN Charter – sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence. We continue to insist that no member state has the right to redraw borders by force or carry out repression against its own people,” Blinken stressed.

He also expressed his intention to oppose the idea that countries can assert spheres of influence or dictate their will to others. In addition, the US will strongly oppose attempts to undermine the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and relevant international human rights treaties, Blinken said.

As Ukrinform reported, the United States took the initiative to reform the UN Security Council. In particular, the American side proposes to add two permanent seats for Africa, one rotating seat for small island developing states, permanent representation for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Currently, the 15-member UN Security Council includes five permanent members with veto power – the United States, Great Britain, France, China and the Soviet Union, whose place was taken by Russia. The remaining ten non-permanent seats are distributed among the regions on a rotational basis. Three places are provided for African countries, two – for the Asia-Pacific region, two – for Latin America and the Caribbean, two – for Western Europe and one place for the countries of Eastern Europe.
