Details: As stated by Biden – on December 30, he is “proudly announcing” the allocation of almost $2.5 billion for security assistance to Ukraine, “as the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom from Russian aggression.”
Biden’s direct speech: “Since Russia launched its next offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has rallied the world to support the Ukrainian people, and my top priority is to give Ukraine the support it needs to win.”
More details: According to him, these almost $2.5 billion include:
- an additional package of reductions in spending on the Ukrainian army in the amount $1.25 billion;
- a package of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) in the amount of $1.22 billion.
The statement said that the Ministry of Defense allocated all remaining USAI funds.
In addition, Biden instructed his administration to continue to provide as much assistance as possible to Ukraine as soon as possible, including the write-off of older American equipment, the rapid delivery to the battlefield, and then the restoration of the US defense industrial base.
“Under my leadership, the United States will continue to work tirelessly to strengthen Ukraine’s position in this war for the rest of my time in office,” the American president assured.
Prehistory:
- Recently, the representative of the White House, John Kirby, said that this package, in particular, will include air defense systems for Ukraine.
- As reported, the Pentagon assumes that the Biden administration is unlikely to spend all the remaining funds for armed support of Ukraine under the PDA program ($5.6 billion), which Congress allocated for sending weapons and other military aid to Ukraine.
- And the WSJ newspaper wrote that the Biden administration will not have time to send military aid to Ukraine for all the funds approved by Congress before the end of its term of office in January 2025, and part of the relevant powers will pass to Donald Trump’s team.
- The Pentagon says that they have reached the limit of weapons that they can send to Ukraine every month without harming their own combat capability, and they are also facing logistical problems in delivery.
