The main purpose of the exercises is to check the capabilities of Belarus and the Russian Federation to guarantee safety and repel possible aggression.
The Head of the Department of International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense of Belarus, Valery Revenko, specified that the training will be focused on reflecting the attacks of hostile air assault, defense combat with the support of aviation, as well as the fight against illegal armed formations and sabotage and reconnaissance groups.
According to him, in 2024, the Belarusian side informed all parties of the Vienna Document about trust and security measures about training and invited representatives of all its signatories to watch them.
On August 6, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus announced the arrival of the first echelon of Russian servicemen and military equipment to participate in joint exercises with Russia “West-2025”. The deputy commander of the Northwest Operational Command Pavel Shabeko then stated that during the exercises they plan to work out “new forms and methods of using military units on the basis of the analysis of the latest modern military conflicts.”
The number of servicemen who will participate in the training is not reported.
Earlier it was planned that more than 13 thousand servicemen would take part in the maneuvers, but in June, the Minister of Defense of Belarus Viktor Khrenin announced the decision to reduce the number of participants in Belarusian-Russian exercises “West-2025” and to postpone the training itself deep into the Belarusian territory. But later the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces-the First Deputy Minister of Defense of Belarus Pavel Muraveiko stated that the preliminary decision to postpone the areas of the West-2025 exercises could be reviewed.
Through these exercises, the country bordering Belarus enhance the protection of their borders and airspace.
