In a recent joint statement, the governments of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have called on NATO to enhance its defense capabilities in response to recent drone incidents on their territories. The statement emphasizes the urgency of improving air defense systems and readiness in the region.
The three Baltic nations reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s defense operations against Russia and its legitimate right to self-defense. They highlighted that the recent drone incidents underscore the critical need for continued investment in defense capabilities.
“These incidents highlight the urgent need to enhance our readiness and invest in our defense potential. The Baltic states are committing at least 5% of their GDP to defense. We are prioritizing the procurement of air defense systems and developing counter-drone technologies, as well as acoustic sensors,” the statement read.
Additionally, the statement called for an immediate strengthening of capabilities necessary for the effective detection and interception of drones that may traverse their airspace.
The Baltic governments stressed that the current presence of NATO aircraft and air defense systems in their countries should not only be maintained but also reinforced to counter all aerial threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles.
Recent Drone Incidents
On March 23, a drone, likely originating from Belarus, entered Lithuanian airspace and exploded over Lake Lavisas, located more than 20 kilometers from the border. Lithuanian radar systems did not detect the drone.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense speculated that the drone was Ukrainian, possibly diverted from its intended target in Russia due to electronic warfare interference.
Subsequently, the Lithuanian Prime Minister confirmed that the drone was indeed Ukrainian, likely one aimed at targets in Primorsk near St. Petersburg.
On March 25, an unidentified drone that had entered Latvia from Russia crashed and exploded, as reported by Latvian military forces. Meanwhile, in Estonia, a drone that had deviated from its course crashed into a smoke stack at a power plant in Auvere that same night.
The Baltic states have urged NATO to bolster defense measures following drone incidents involving Ukrainian drones crossing into their airspace. This call highlights the ongoing security concerns in the region amid the conflict in Ukraine.
