Regular consumption of yogurt can help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

This assumption is supported by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In March, the department supported the initiative of the company Danone North America – the manufacturer of Dannon brands and other popular yogurts, allowing information about the possible benefit of yogurt in preventing diabetes to be placed on the packages, writes Fox News.

However, the FDA specifies that such claims must be worded in such a way as not to mislead consumers and also meet a number of conditions. In an official statement, the organization said that although there is some evidence to support the link between yogurt consumption and a reduced risk of diabetes, this evidence remains limited.

Such claims, called “qualified health claims”, imply that the facts presented are not yet conclusive, but have a scientific basis. A regular serving of yogurt is about two cups, according to Atlanta-based nutritionist Sherry Coleman Collins. (three servings) per week, which is the minimum amount for possible benefit.

Collins notes that yogurt is just one part of an overall balanced diet. “A well-rounded diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and fermented dairy products has significant health benefits,” she emphasizes.

Yogurt with live active cultures may be beneficial for maintaining a healthy gut microbiota, which in turn reduces the risk of a number of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Beneficial bacteria contained in fermented foods contribute to overall health improvement.

When choosing yogurt, the nutritionist recommends giving preference to varieties with a low content of added sugar. Natural Greek yogurt is especially good, rich in protein and calcium, which can be sweetened with honey or fresh fruit. At the same time, exceeding the recommended portions is unlikely to bring additional benefit.
