During the attempted mechanized assault, the Russians really managed to enter the territory of the city of Kupyansk, Kharkiv region, from the north-eastern side, but at present the occupiers do not control this area of the city.
This is stated in a new report of the Institute for the Study of War.
Analysts confirm that Russian troops did advance into the city of Kupyansk the other day in an attempted company-sized mechanized assault, but ISW does not believe that Russian forces are in control of the area where these events took place.
Geo-verified footage released on November 13 showed at least four Russian vehicles carrying out the assault. This indicates that the troops of the Russian Federation have recently advanced in the southern direction [на Куп’янськ] along the railway line.
Russian and Ukrainian sources said that Russian forces attacked with two columns of armored vehicles, and that one column consisted of one tank and three armored vehicles, while the other column consisted of an unspecified number of vehicles.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces denied the information about the stay of Russians in Kupyansk and the occupation of Illinka in Donetsk region
On November 14, the head of the Ukrainian Center for Combating Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, reported that Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks in Kupyansk and prevented Russian troops from taking positions in the city’s suburbs. Strategic Communications Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (StratCom) also reported that Kupyansk is fully under the control of Ukraine, and repeated the report of the General Staff of Ukraine from November 13 that Ukrainian forces repelled a Russian assault on the settlement.
For its part, ISW estimates that Russian forces have probably advanced into the northeastern part of Kupyansk, but most likely do not control this area. So ISW maps currently show areas in the northeastern districts of Kupyansk where, according to the Institute’s analysts, Russian forces were present or attacking, but did not control those areas.
The ISW also reminds that the occupying forces intensified offensive operations near Kupyansk during the last two months. The Institute for the Study of War continues to assess that the capture of Kupyansk by Russia will lead to significant consequences at the operational level. However, ISW is not yet ready to assess whether Russian forces will be able to use their recent tactical-level gains in these areas to achieve significant operational gains. Russian troops also continued offensive operations north of Kupyansk in the Golubivka area; to the east of Kupyansk near Petropavlivka; to the southeast of Kupyansk near the villages of Kolisnikivka, Hlushkivka, Kruglyakivka, Lozova, Zagryzova, Kucherivka during November 13 and 14.
