At the UN, because of the right of veto, it is impossible to truly solve the issue of war and peace – Zelenskyi

It is impossible to truly resolve issues of war and peace at the UN, as Russia uses the right of veto, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said.

According to him, the UN is powerless to stop the war, but the Ukrainian Peace Formula can do it.

“Unfortunately, it is impossible to truly and fairly resolve issues of war and peace at the UN, as too much depends on the Security Council and the right of veto. When the aggressor uses the veto, the UN is powerless to stop the war. But the Peace Formula can do it, it has no veto power. Therefore, this is the best opportunity for peace – everyone is equal, and it is effective and comprehensive,” he said during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

According to him, proposals for alternatives, half-hearted settlement plans not only ignore the interests and suffering of Ukrainians, not only ignore reality, but also give Putin political space to continue the war and put pressure on the world.

“Any parallel or alternative attempts to achieve peace are actually attempts to achieve a lull, not an end to the war, as there has been a global initiative – the Peace Formula – for two years now. And maybe someone wants a Nobel Prize for his political biography for a frozen truce instead of real peace, but the only rewards that Putin will give you in return are more suffering and disasters,” the Ukrainian president added.

On September 24, the President of Ukraine said in a speech to the UN Security Council that Russia can only be “forced” into peace, and condemned Iran and North Korea as “accomplices” who helped Moscow by providing weapons it used to attack Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Nobel laureate, human rights defender Oleksandra Matviychuk announced the day before that an open letter was sent to the UN Secretary General about the suspension of Russia’s membership in the UN General Assembly.

“In addition to Ukrainian organizations, this letter was signed by colleagues from Latin America. Among them are more than 20 former ministers of foreign affairs and many well-known human rights defenders, most of whom held important positions within the framework of the Inter-American Human Rights Protection System or in the UN itself,” the head of the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties wrote on Facebook.

During his week-long visit to the USA, Zelensky intensively holds meetings and speeches with appeals to Washington to continue decisive support for Ukraine.
