Martian meteorites are extremely rare – only about 400 out of more than 77 thousand officially registered meteorites are Martian origin. It is reported that the meteorite fell to the ground after the asteroid strike on Mars. As a result of the impact, fragments of the solid surface of the red planet were entered into space, one of which flew 225 million kilometers to the Earth’s surface.
NWA 16788 has a size of 37.5 × 28 × 15 cm and a weight of 24.5 kg, which is about 6.5% of the weight of all known Martian debris on Earth. Its surface is reddish-brown, with numerous cracks, reminiscent of a miniature landscape of Mars.
Before the auction, the meteorite underwent a laboratory examination, which confirmed its Martian origin. In particular, more than 21% of its composition is a maskline – glass, which was formed when the asteroid is struck on the surface of Mars.
The initial rate for NWA 16788 meteorite at the auction of Sotheby’s was $ 2 million. The organizers predicted that the final price would be in the range Meteorites sold at auctions. The buyer’s name is not disclosed.
