The SVT TV and Radio Company reported that a large -scale police operation was conducted near the Waxala Square in Uppsal, adding that the suspect fled from the crime scene on an electric scooter.
“We have received some shelling reports in the area. That’s all we can say at the moment. I can’t say more,” Magnus Clarin, a Swedish police spokesman, said before confirming death.
The motive of the incident is not yet clear on Tuesday.
Earlier this year, the European Parliament stated that Sweden is “fighting a wave of bandit violence.”
According to Reuters, in 2023 Sweden had the highest level of deadly violence with the use of firearms per capita in the EU. In 2024, at least 40 people were shot dead in the country with a population of only 10 million people – less than at the peak in 2022, when 63 people were shot.
Although Sweden has a high level of ownership of the EU weapons, the Swedes must obtain a license before they are allowed to own weapons, and the country sets strict restrictions on the right to do so.
The shooting on Tuesday occurred only a few months after an armed man opened a fire at the Adult Education Center in the Swedish city of Erebra, which the country’s prime minister called “the worst mass shooting in Sweden’s history.”
In total, ten people were killed as a result of the attack that occurred in February, and six more people were injured.
