Painful cramps, nausea and vomiting were among the symptoms later experienced by attendees of a food festival celebrating Southern California’s best restaurants.
Mark Kapczynski was one of 80 people who became ill after the norovirus outbreak. And he noted that it was his most unpleasant experience and he is still recovering.
Of course I never thought it was the 101 event of the year – these restaurants are too good, it can’t be
Kapczynski said he and his wife attended the Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants event – the best food tasting festival, which marks, according to the newspaper’s editors, the 101 best places in Southern California.
We went to Providence which is a world class restaurant that serves fresh oysters and clams with a variety of sauces and I ate two portions very quickly
And according to him, after that he immediately felt bloated, and the next day his symptoms worsened.
Kapczynski is not the only one who felt bad after eating oysters. The Los Angeles County Health Department is currently investigating the Norovirus outbreak.
So far, 80 cases have been identified. Emergency room physician Dr. Ali Jamehdor said the illness is not a typical stomach ailment.
It seems that the oysters have really affected the patients, because they end up in the emergency room very sick. Vomiting, diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, all because of a germ called vibrio. This is a very specific bacterium that is unique to oysters and causes a disease that affects humans very badly
Providence, one of Los Angeles’ best-known restaurants, said the oysters come from farms near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Sanitary inspectors at the event signed all processing and serving rules.
“The nature of norovirus is such that it would not have been detectable by the vendor, restaurant or health inspectors on site, given that norovirus does not affect the appearance, smell or taste of shellfish,” the restaurant said in a statement.
10 days after the event, the California Department of Public Health issued a warning about Canadian oysters. The warning said that shellfish can make people sick.
