An international group of researchers has made a breakthrough in the field of energy by developing a new material for sodium-ion batteries. This discovery could be a significant step towards more affordable and sustainable energy.

The new material, sodium vanadium phosphate, has a high energy density that makes it competitive with traditional lithium-ion batteries. “Sodium is almost 50 times cheaper than lithium and can even be extracted from seawater, making it a much greener option for large-scale energy storage,” said Pieremanuele Canepa, lead scientist at the lab that developed the new material.

The advantages of the new material are not limited to high energy density and availability of raw materials. It also has high stability, which makes it possible to extend the life of the batteries. This means that devices equipped with such batteries will be able to work longer without the need to replace the battery.
