During large-scale research in one of the new seven wonders of the world – the ancient city of Petra in Jordan – scientists made a sensational discovery.
The lost “eighth wonder of the world” was found in New Zealand
An ancient tomb with the remains of 12 people was discovered under the famous Treasury, cut into the rock. This discovery may change our understanding of the Nabatean culture and the history of Petra.
The research was conducted by an international team of scientists led by Professor Richard Bates from the University of St Andrews. Initially, the purpose of the expedition was to study the state of the Treasury and the surrounding territories. However, thanks to the application of modern geophysical methods, scientists have discovered underground voids. Further excavations confirmed the presence of a burial chamber.
The found artifacts and human remains date back to the 1st century BC and 1st century AD. This suggests that the tomb was built during the heyday of the Nabatean kingdom and was used to bury noble people.

“This discovery is of great scientific importance as it allows us to better understand the life and culture of the Nabateans,” says Professor Bates. “We hope that further research will help us unravel the secrets of this ancient people and shed light on the history of Petra.”
