“Border police officers from the territorial inspections of Siget-Marmaci and Iasi, as well as coastal security officers, found more than 5400 citizens of Ukraine on the border with Ukraine, who illegally crossed the border with Romania, in the first seven months of 2025.

The department specifies that Ukrainians who arrive in Romania thus use a special legal regime adapted to the situation caused by the war between Ukraine and Russia.

“Instead of ordinary procedures used for the illegal border crossing, they can turn to existing protection mechanisms, the main of which is temporary protection regulated at the European Union level, which is also used in Romania,” – says the cited source.

Law enforcement officers also faced situations where citizens of Ukraine returned to Ukraine after receiving temporary protection and accompanied other compatriots. In three cases, citizens of Ukraine who became leaders were previously arrested for the illegal transfer of migrants.

“A clear example is an example when the border guards of the Border Police Sector Vali Visheului found five citizens of Ukraine who crossed the Maramuresh Mountains. Among them was a 23-year-old young man, already a beneficiary of temporary protection in Romania, who played the role of a conductor. He was detained and previously arrested.

Trying to escape from the war in Ukraine, there were also cases where Ukrainians were found by mountain rescuers or emergency inspectors that threatened exhaustion, hypothermia or even injuries, given difficult conditions in the mountainous area.

“In collaboration with the Mountain Rescue Service and Emergency Inspectorates, they often intervene to provide first aid and save their lives. Since the beginning of the year, more than 150 Ukrainian citizens have been assisted, which has threatened exhaustion, hypothermia or accidents,” the border guards said.

In December 2024, Romanian rescuers received a request for assistance from three citizens of Ukraine, who were in one of the most complex areas of the Romanian part of Marmaros. They were found in a day.

At the same time, a 28-year-old Ukrainian, who escaped from mobilization with several months of kittens, was rescued from the mountain gorge of a 28-year-old Ukrainian.
