Smith, who is a representative of the Opposition Conservative Party, said she personally did not support Alberta’s exit from Canada.

“But if Ottawa for one reason or another continues the attack on our province, as it was over the last decade, then Alberta residents will need to be decided on this. I will make their decision,” the politician said.

Smith accused the previous governments of Canada for the implementation of legislation, which limited Alberta’s ability to produce and export oil, which, she said, cost billions of dollars. The premiere of the province also believes that the Central Government is working too much in local affairs.

“We do not ask for a special attitude … We only want to be free in the opportunity to develop and export the huge richness of the resources we have, and to choose how we provide health services, education and other social services to our people, even if it is a different approach than a vision in Ottawa,” Smith said.

So far, Canada had two precedents of separation referendums – in the predominantly French -speaking province of Quebec in 1980 and 1995. Both turned out to be unsuccessful.

We will remind, in the early elections in Canada the liberal party, headed by Mark Karney, won. A few months ago, the victory would be given to conservatives – however, against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s attack against Canada and the resignation of the long -term leader of Liberals, Justin Trudeau, voter sympathy again swayed in favor of the Liberal Party.

Carney after winning the election declared Hard approach Before future negotiations with Donald Trump.
