Details: Danish legislators initially agreed in 2021 to design new military-naval ships for patrolling and operations to eliminate the consequences of environmental accidents in the Baltic Sea.
However, the project will now be shifted to focus on the purchase of ships equipped to perform tasks around Greenland.
“The safety situation has changed significantly,” said Defense Minister Troels Lund Polesen.
He emphasized the need to replace the existing fleet of “aging” TheTis class ships in Greenland.
The agreement supported by the vast majority of parties in Parliament is part of Denmark’s efforts to strengthen its defense capability in the Arctic region and follows the previously agreed this week to allocate 14.6 MDRD Crops ($ 2 billion) for new warships and drones.
This happens against the backdrop of the diplomatic crisis between Copenhagen and Washington after US President Donald Trump said he wanted to take control of Greenland for security.
The Danish Ministry of Defense has stated that changing plans is possible because neighboring countries are allocated more resources for security in the Baltic Sea.
They added that Denmark will have to contribute to other opportunities such as frigates and planes in the region. Danish legislators also agreed to buy new marine ecological vessels through a new Ministry of Crisis.

- Meanwhile, according to FT, Denmark has proposed the EU and NATO a joint strategy for Trump’s encroachment on Greenland, which is to refrain from response to the US President’s statements.
- And the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barro said the country had discussed with Denmark sending troops to Greenland in response to Trump’s repeated threats.
