After the statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorski, regarding the peninsula occupied by Russia, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, reminded that Crimea is Ukraine.

“Crimea is Ukraine. Russia has violated international law and must be held accountable for it,” he wrote in a telegram.

The other day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosław Sikorski, proposed as a possible option the transfer of Crimea to the UN mandate with the mission of preparing a fair referendum after checking who are legal residents.

In February 2014, armed men in uniforms without identification marks seized the building of the Verkhovna Rada of the ARC, the Council of Ministers of the ARC, the Simferopol airport, the Kerch ferry crossing, other strategic objects, and also blocked the actions of Ukrainian troops. The Russian authorities initially refused to recognize that these armed men were servicemen of the Russian army. Later, Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted that it was the Russian military.

On March 16, 2014, an unrecognized “referendum” on the status of the peninsula was held on the territory of Crimea and Sevastopol, as a result of which Russia included Crimea in its composition. Neither Ukraine, nor the European Union, nor the USA recognized the results of the “referendum” vote. On March 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the “accession” of Crimea to Russia.

International organizations recognized the occupation and annexation of Crimea as illegal and condemned Russia’s actions. Western countries introduced economic sanctions. Russia denies the annexation of the peninsula and calls it “the restoration of historical justice.” The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially announced February 20, 2014 as the start date of Russia’s temporary occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol.
