Detailand: According to the publication, the detention of 23-year-old Ukrainian Ilya S. took place on December 26 at the Warsaw-Okenche airport, where he sat for hours in one of the cafes. The young man was found to have a device for jamming radio waves, operating on frequencies reserved for dispatch communication and navigation.

The spokesman of the District Prosecutor’s Office of Warsaw, Piotr Skiba, officially confirmed these facts. Polish authorities perceive the case as “extremely serious”.

The young man may be charged under the criminal code for actions that pose a threat to air traffic safety.

According to the investigation data – as cited by the publication, without specifying whether these are data from sources or official comments – the young man ordered coffee and a snack in one of the establishments in the area open to passengers, opened his laptop and sat like that for about six hours. The investigation assumes that he was sitting at the airport in this way not only on the day of his detention, but also several days before – this is verified by surveillance camera records.

According to the sources, who commented on the condition of anonymity, after the detention, the Ukrainian could not explain why he needed a “muffler” and was confused in his testimony about himself and his trip.

“One day he said he was a soldier, the next day he said he was a businessman. He also could not explain what he was doing in Poland, when he arrived here and why,” said an anonymous interlocutor familiar with the investigation.

The prosecutor’s office reported that, according to the Ukrainian, he permanently lives in Canada – this has not yet been confirmed.

“The suspect denies guilt and gave testimony that, at this stage of the investigation, is not supported by the collected evidence,” Piotr Skiba noted.

On December 27, a petition was filed for a preventive measure in the form of an arrest, the court approved the arrest for one month.

According to the publication, the investigation now allows various scenarios – that the young man was going to harm the airport systems, that he could spy, or that he was just an oddball who had no bad intentions. In order to find out the circumstances, his laptop, mobile phone and seized “jammer” will be examined. In particular, they need to find out whether this is a primitive device that can be easily purchased on the market, or something more complex, and what could be done with it.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the Internal Security Agency of Poland may be involved in the investigation.

What happened before:

  • At the end of December, a man was detained in Poland who could film the railway infrastructure and the transportation of military equipment.
  • In addition, damage to the railway track in the central part of Poland was discovered.
