Photographer Jeroen Van Nieuwenhoeve captured a fascinating sight: the meeting of red-hot lava with Icelandic snow.

The video, taken during the eruption of the Sundhnukagigar volcano in February 2024, quickly went viral, striking users with its beauty and unusualness.

Many viewers have expressed doubts about the authenticity of the video, suggesting that it was created with the help of artificial intelligence. Skepticism was caused, in particular, by the lack of steam during the contact of the lava with the snow. However, the photographer assured that the footage was absolutely real and had not undergone any processing.

The explanation for this paradox lies in the Leidenfrost effect. This phenomenon, discovered as early as the 18th century, explains why a liquid, in contact with a much hotter surface, forms a protective vapor layer around itself, which does not allow it to immediately boil. It was this effect that allowed the snow to remain on the surface of the lava without violent evaporation.

Van Niuwenhove also noted that the lava’s unusual behavior in the video may be due to its unique physical properties, which are often distorted in movies and other works of art.

The photographer’s video became clear evidence that our planet is capable of surprising us again and again. It also reminds us that even in the age of digital technology and artificial intelligence, nature remains the greatest artist.
