The prosecutor’s office of Nanterre opened an investigation to find out the cause of death. The case was initially investigated by the judicial police, but has now been handed over to local law enforcement agencies.
According to the TV channel, Yevgeny S., who in the past worked for the Russian site “Otkrytie Media” and received asylum in France, expressed suicidal thoughts for several days.
Immediately before his death, he sent a farewell letter to his loved ones. In a note written in Russian, the journalist claimed that he had become the victim of a large-scale hacker intervention.
“All my accounts were hacked. My Telegram account was stolen. All my mobile phones and apps were cloned… My SMS and phone calls were intercepted… My phone was infected by hackers,” he wrote.
He further hinted at suicide: “I am the only person who should be blamed for my death. You can also blame my negligence. I understand that I have disappointed many people. I have no excuses, except that I did not want to harm anyone. I have never worked for the interests of Russia and I have never been recruited by anyone,” the journalist wrote.
According to a friend who spoke to him by phone on Sunday, January 4, three days before his death, his mental state had deteriorated. “He was out of his mind. It seemed to me that he was in a state of acute paranoia,” the Russian explained in a comment to BFMTV. According to him, Evgeny S. “demonstrated suicidal thoughts.”
We will remind:
- In December, Spain suspended the investigation into the murder of a defector pilot from the Russian Federation.
- In June 2024, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in Western intelligence services, reported that the killers had received money from Russian civil servants in Vienna for the pilot’s murder.
