The obesity and type 2 diabetes drug semaglutide, mostly sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy, may reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke regardless of how many pounds a person loses.

In addition, a reduction in waist size is associated with better heart performance.

This is stated in a new study, the results of which published in the scientific journal The Lancet, writes The Guardian.

In their work, researchers from University College London aimed to explore the additional benefits of semaglutide, which is the main ingredient in the weight loss and weight management drug Wegovy.

They analyzed data from more than 17,000 people from 41 countries over the age of 45 who were overweight or obese. The scientists intended to find out whether taking the drug causes cardiovascular diseases, in particular heart attacks and strokes.

Half of the study participants received weekly injections of semaglutide, while the other half received a placebo.

A preliminary analysis of the data showed that semaglutide reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular diseases by 20%. The scientists found that the benefit of the drug was evident regardless of how much weight people lost while taking the medication.

In addition, the scientists said that the results of the study prove that the drug not only has a positive effect on the body through weight loss, but also has other benefits for the heart.

Indeed, researchers found that even mildly overweight people with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 experienced the same benefits as people with the highest BMIs.

The positive effect was also largely independent of how much weight people lost during the first four months of treatment.

However, the researchers noticed a difference between the reduction in waist size and the benefits for the heart. According to scientists, 33% of the observed positive effect on the risk of cardiovascular complications was due to a decrease in waist circumference.

“Abdominal fat (fat that accumulates in the abdominal cavity, around the internal organs – ed.) is more dangerous to our cardiovascular health than overall weight, so it is not surprising that there is a link between a reduced waist circumference and a positive effect on the cardiovascular system.” – said the main author of the study and professor from the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University College London John Dinfield.

However, two-thirds of the positive effects of semaglutide on the cardiovascular system still remain unexplained. So these results significantly change the understanding of the drug’s mechanism of action, the scientists added.
