As a result of the explosion, a fire broke out in the engine room of the vessel, and Turkish rescuers began an operation to evacuate the 25 crew members on board.

The Kairos likely hit a mine and may sink, according to shipping agency Tribeca, adding that rescue tugs and the Coast Guard were dispatched to assist.

And a Reuters source said that another tanker in the Black Sea, the Virat, suffered an explosion. Both it and Kairos are included in the list of vessels of Russia’s “shadow fleet” that have been sanctioned.

In 2023, it was reported that a tanker with petroleum products under the flag of Liberia ran into a mine in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania.

In 2022 in Turkey for an unknown reason there was an explosion on an oil tanker near the port of Samsun.
