Details: According to the foreign minister, a few months ago Scholz asked Zelensky if it would be appropriate to call Putin.

“Zelensky opposed this idea, and Scholz abstained,” he said.

However, as Kuleba noted, after the elections in the USA, Scholz, despite Zelensky’s previous objections to the expediency of negotiations with Putin, decided to call the head of the Kremlin.

“Zelensky publicly but mildly criticized him for this,” he noted.

According to Kuleba, such a decision by the German chancellor has several consequences, among which, in particular, the fact that Putin “broke out of European isolation, and Germany paved the way for him, right after Hungary.”

“Putin has demonstrated to the world that his strategy is working – the West will eventually bow its head under the cover of calls to him to stop the war, which he is not going to do,” he believes.

Kuleba also drew attention to the fact that with such a step Scholz hit Germany’s reputation among Ukrainians.

The ex-minister is also sure that such a decision by the German chancellor will not strengthen his image among German voters.

At the same time, the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs admitted that he may not know “all the arguments in favor of this call”, but he is “trying to understand to what extent it was justified”.

Prehistory:

  • In the afternoon of November 15, it became known that Scholz spoke with the head of the Kremlin for the first time in two years. Then Zelenskyi called this call “Pandora’s box”.
  • Jurgen Hardt, a deputy from the main opposition party CDU/CSU, believes that Putin will consider Scholz’s move “as a manifestation of weakness, not strength.”
  • At the same time, the general secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Matthias Mirsch, defended the chancellor’s decision.
