Veteran Australian broadcaster Alan Jones has been charged with assaulting seven men and a 17-year-old boy. The 83-year-old man was taken into custody at his Sydney apartment in the early hours of Monday morning. About this UNN reports with reference to the BBC.

Details

Jones is one of Australia’s most influential media figures. He previously denied allegations of abuse first published by The Sydney Morning Herald in 2023.

He now faces 24 charges in incidents that took place between 2001 and 2019, including 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault.

All but two of the charges are sex crimes. Some of the alleged victims knew the radio host personally, and at least one of them worked for him, police said. Others were allegedly assaulted when they first met him, New South Wales Police spokesman Michael Fitzgerald told reporters.

Commissioner Karen Webb previously said police had conducted a “very complex”, “prolonged” and “thorough” investigation and expected more alleged victims could now come forward. “There is no such thing as a case that is too old to investigate,” she told a news conference.

Jones was released on bond. He will appear in court on December 18.

Jones is said to have coached Australia’s national rugby union team from 1984 to 1988 before his career as a radio presenter. He also occasionally worked as a speechwriter and adviser to Liberal Party figures, including former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, and made several unsuccessful bids for the party’s representative in state and federal politics.

Jones was a Sydney-based on-air host for a local radio station for decades before retiring in 2020, citing health issues.

Jones had one of the biggest audiences in the country, according to the BBC, but was often controversial. He hit the headlines in 2012 for suggesting that the father of then-prime minister Julia Gillard had “died of shame” and in 2019 faced a massive advertiser boycott by saying someone should “put a sock” down the throat of then-Nova leader Jacinda Ardern of Zealand.

Jones has also successfully sued for defamation on several occasions.
