South Korean opposition lawmakers have called for the impeachment of President Yun Suk-yeol after he initially declared martial law but later backed off, Reuters reported.
As the agency writes, a coalition of deputies from opposition parties plans to submit a draft law on Yun’s impeachment on Wednesday, December 4, with a subsequent vote within 72 hours.
“Parliament should focus on the immediate suspension of the president in order to pass the impeachment bill as soon as possible,” one of the coalition MPs, Hwang Un-ha, told reporters.
Yun’s chief of staff and senior secretaries have also been asked to resign en masse, a presidential official said.
Declaration of martial law in South Korea – what is known
On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol announced the introduction of martial law in the country. He accused the country’s opposition of being “controls the parliament, sympathizes with North Korea and paralyzes the government with anti-state activities.” Making a statement, the president promised “root out pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order.”

After that, South Korea’s military command issued a decree banning any political activity, particularly related to the National Assembly (parliament), regional assemblies, political parties, creation of political organizations, holding rallies and protest actions. In addition, all media and publishing houses are under control.
The AP reports that Yoon Seok-yeol’s approval ratings have fallen in recent months, and he has been struggling to push his agenda against the opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022.
It is noted that the Korean conservative People’s Party of Yoon Seok-yeol “deadlocked” with the liberal opposition Democratic Party over the 2025 budget bill.
