Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko (WTA 16) and the first racket of the world Arina Sobolenko (“neutral woman”) formed the first pair of 1/8 finals of the 2026 Australian Open Championship.

Mboko beat the 14th seed in three sets in the third round of the major Clara Towson (Denmark, WTA 14) in 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Victoria made it to the second week of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. Mboko became the first Canadian tennis player to reach the fourth round of a Slam since Leila Fernandez at Roland Garros 2022, and the first at the Australian Open since Eugenie Bouchard in 2015.

Sobolenko won in the 1/16 finals on two tie-breaks Anastasia Potapova (Austria, WTA 55). In the second game, Sobolenko lost a 4:0 advantage, failed to serve once in the match and won 3:6 in the tiebreak.

Mboko had never played against Sobolenko before. Also, Victoria has not yet held meetings with the leaders of the world ranking.
