Danish tennis player Holger Rune suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury and may miss about six months.

The incident happened during the semi-final match of the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm against Frenchman Hugo Humber. Rune won the first set 6:4, but with the score 2:2 (40:40) in the second set, he felt a sharp pain in his ankle, heard a click and could not continue the game. He left the court with the help of a physiotherapist.

A medical examination confirmed a ruptured Achilles tendon. Holger will probably need surgery. According to doctors, the recovery will take three to six months, which casts doubt on the participation of the 22-year-old Dane in the next major tournaments, including the Australian Open and the Masters in Paris.

Rune recently reached the quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters. Rune is ranked 10th in the updated ATP rankings. The winner of the tournament in Stockholm was Kasper Ruud, who beat Hugo Umber in the final.
