Marta KOSTYUK: “Sometimes men get three to five times more than we do”

A famous Ukrainian tennis player shared her opinion on financial inequality”, — write: sport.ua

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk (#26 WTA) shared her opinion on the distribution of finances in men’s and women’s tennis, and also talked about income inequality.

– The money received by men and women in tennis is different. How big is this difference and why?

– Huge. We’re not just talking about Grand Slam tournaments. People start to think very narrowly: “Men play five sets at the Grand Slam, why don’t they have more prizes than women?”.

We have probably 80% or 85% of all other tournaments where the men get paid more than we do. Sometimes three or five times more. Apart from that, we are only talking about prize money, there is contract money, there are exhibition matches and sponsors. This widens the gap between men and women even more.

I forgot to say that men are paid to come to some tournaments. I won’t name names, but you can be paid a million dollars to come. Just for coming to this tournament. For women, the maximum figure is, I think, 100 thousand.

It’s just for coming. And plus you get the prizes of this tournament. There could be another million. This is a cosmic difference that people do not understand, Kostyuk said.

Famous lineups at the World Tennis League. Who will Svitolina and Kostyuk play with?
