“The organizers of the tournament in Charleston did not allow Katarina Zavatsky to rest properly”, — write: sport.ua
“I played 8 sets in 2 days on an indoor hard court. This week was the WTA 125 tournament in Charleston, right after the showdown in Dallas. The outdoor soil (in Charleston) is the only one on this continent.
She asked to start on Wednesday as an exception, since she finished playing only on Sunday (a match for the national team).
I wrote an email asking to start on Wednesday via:
- 1) changes in coverage
- 2) transition from an indoor to an open court
- 3) a large number of clocks played on the court
- 4) injuries/pains
The answer was as follows:
“Hello, Katarina. Thank you for your letter. I completely understand and can’t promise anything but will do my best to accommodate you on Tuesday. We have no 1st round matches on Wednesday. All the best and see you soon.”
Is it possible that I can play on Monday? I only flew (to Dallas) on Monday… Why can’t I get a clear answer? On Monday evening, I wanted to ask again if I could play at least one last run on Tuesday. The answer was as follows:
“Wanted to release the schedule with your match first run! Let’s see what I can do…”
How can you even think of putting me on the first run after the week I’ve had? And you care so much about the players? Do you want to kill players psychologically and physically? I just can’t shut up about this crap anymore.
Okay, even if it’s impossible to put me on Wednesday: just explain to me, name the real reasons? Regulations…? WTA Rules…? It can’t be serious.
Today I lost. I couldn’t compete and show people a tennis game, a tennis fight. It was just a shame for me to play at such a level. I could not give much because of these circumstances! One more day (of rest) would make all the difference to me.
I could lose, but I could play good tennis and show the kids that it’s a good game, a good sport. I thought that’s what we’re here for, too.”
On November 19, Zavatska lost to Ekaterina Makarova in the 1st round of the WTA 125 tournament in Charleston. On Monday night (in Kyiv), she finished performing for the Ukrainian national team in Dallas. The Blue and Yellows beat Austria 3:2 in the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs.
