This was the first meeting of the rivals. In the deciding game, Joao failed to realize a break point in the 7th game, after which he immediately served and then Sonego closed the match.
Fonseca played at the Grand Slam for the first time. He started with qualification, and in the 1/64 final overcame the ninth racket of the world, Andrei Rublev. Fonseca’s 14-match win streak ended.
