Electronic judging will no longer be the prerogative of exceptionally large tournaments. The International Tennis Federation has announced the introduction of a new three -level classification (gold, silver and bronze) to make the technology accessible to a smaller scale. This decision is agreed with the organizers of four Great Helmet, ATP and WTA tournaments.
The electronic judgment system has replaced linear judges and its decisions cannot theoretically be challenged by players or canceled by the main arbiter.
By this time, technology was used mainly in ATP and WTA tournaments, as well as in Davis Cup and Billy Cup Gin King. It will now become accessible to national tournaments, as well as for ITF competitions (Futures) and women’s (ITF Pro) – with adaptation to more modest logistics and financial conditions.
Gold -level systems will remain an exclusive for elite tournaments. Silver and Bronze systems are designed with smaller budgets: they require smaller infrastructure and do not require the presence of operators outside the court.
At the moment, there are four technologies (Hawk-Eye, Foxtenn, IMGA ELC and Sentinel), and the silver category is two (Playreplay and Zenniz Smart Court). Bronze category technologies do not exist yet.
The electronic judgment system was first presented at the 2017 ATP final tournament and has become widespread during the Covid-19 pandemic. For the first time in Wimbledon it was officially applied in 2025.
