19-year-old American tennis player Lerner Tien (ATP 121) sensationally advanced to the 3rd round of the 2025 Australian Open.

In the 1/32 final, the American overcame the “neutral” in five sets Daniil Medvedev (ATP 5) in 4 hours and 49 minutes.

Lerner Tien (USA) [Q] – Daniil Medvedev [5] – 6:3, 7:6 (7:4), 6:7 (8:10), 1:6, 7:6 (10:7)

In the final set, Medvedev served for the match with a score of 6:5, but Tien made a break by executing three crazy winners.

This was the first meeting of the rivals.

Lerner is playing in the Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. On the courts of Melbourne, he started with the qualification, and in the 1st round he defeated Hugo Carabelli in five games.

Tien scored the highest ranking win of his career. His previous best result was a victory over Arthur Fiss at the Youth Finals. The Frenchman then took the 20th place in the ATP ranking.

Tien’s next opponent at AO-2025 will be Corentin Moute (France, ATP 69).

Earlier, the Australian Open left another “psycho-neutral” Andrei Rublev, who lost to Joao Fonseca in the 1st round. It is interesting that Joao and Lerner played each other in the final of Next Gen, the Brazilian won then.
