Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic commented on the victory over the 19-year-old Nishesham Basavareddy in the match of the 1st round of the Australian Open 2025:

“He was better than me for a set and a half. He deserved every bit of the applause he got when he left the court. To be honest, I had never seen him play before this. I didn’t know much about him. Matches like this are always difficult when you play someone who has nothing to lose. The first match for him at the Grand Slam. He pleasantly surprised me with all his punches and fighting spirit at the end. I wish him all the best in the rest of his career.”

Novak also spoke about cooperation with Andy Murraywho trains him for AO-2025:

“It was a little strange to see him in my box next to the court. We have been competing against each other at the highest level for over 20 years. It’s great that he is with me now. In the middle of the match, he helped me a lot with advice. It’s good that now we have the possibility of coaching. When you watch the match from the sidelines, a completely different perspective opens up. He is doing very well, it is a pleasant experience. I hope we will not stop there.”

Novak defeated Nishesh with a score of 4:6, 6:3, 6:4, 6:2. In the 2nd round of the Australian Open, Djokovic will play against Jamie Faria.
