Diana Yastremska

The 24-year-old Ukrainian finished 2024 with variable success. After an impressive semi-final at the Australian Open, her results took a turn for the worse, with just 12 wins and 21 losses between February and December. Diana has been particularly bad against top-100 opponents, losing seven straight matches since July 2024.

In the new season, Yastremska has not yet been able to break the series of failures, losing in the first round of the tournament in Brisbane to “neutral” Anastasia Potapova with a score of 5:7, 4:6. In this match, Diana demonstrated a low percentage of points won on the first and second serve – 57% and 47%, respectively. Despite the powerful and aggressive manner of the game, Yastremska often makes a large number of unforced errors, which negatively affects her results.

The upcoming Australian Open will be a key test for Diana, as she needs to defend last year’s semi-final and 780 ranking points, which largely secure her current 33rd position in the world. A successful performance in Melbourne can not only restore confidence, but also correct the impression of a failed 2024.

Katie Volynets

The 23-year-old Ukrainian-American had a successful 2024 season, finishing with a record of 46 wins and 24 losses. Among her achievements, it is worth highlighting the victory at the WTA 125 tournament in Makarska, which became the biggest trophy in her career. The result of the year was the 58th place in the WTA ranking – a result close to her career high (56th position).

Volynets shows a confident game on the hard court, as evidenced by her victories over strong opponents such as Klara Towson, Marta Kostiuk and Dalma Galfi at the end of last season. Last week, she reached the quarter-finals of the tournament in Auckland, beating Erika Andreeva (6-4, 6-7, 6-2) and Ann Lee (6-4, 6-3), showing resilience and the ability to cope with tight matches.

Volynets is known for her stable play in the back line and physical training, which allows her to successfully face more aggressive opponents. That quality will be important in her clash with Diana Jastremska, especially given their previous head-to-head match in 2023. Then, on clay, Volynets managed to win in three sets with a score of 2:6, 7:6, 6:3, despite the pressure from the stronger Ukrainian.

Prediction for the match

The match promises to be stubborn given the style of both tennis players: the aggressive game of Yastremska and the stability of Volynets can lead to protracted draws. Given the form of the American, her victory in the previous meeting and the propensity of both for long matches, the bet is on a total of more than 20.5 games for a coefficient of 1.7 looks justified.
