In the round of 16, the American unexpectedly lost to Kandmberly Birrell (Australia, WTA 113) in 2 hours and 3 minutes.

This was the second meeting of the rivals. On October 3, 2024, Emma defeated the Australian in the 2nd round of the WTA 250 competition in Hong Kong.

Kimberly played for the fifth time against a representative of the top 10 of the WTA ranking and won for the second time. In December 2018, she won against Daria Kasatkina (at that time – the 10th racket in the world) also in the 1/16 finals of the 500 in Brisbane.

In the third round, Birrell will meet the winner of the confrontation between Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine, WTA 33) and Anastasia Potapova (WTA 35).
