The city encourages those who have vehicles to use electric vehicles.
According to a 2022 study conducted by consulting firm Oliver Wyman and the University of California, Berkeley, the Finnish city ranks fifth in the Urban Mobility Readiness Index.
“Helsinki stands out for its exceptional connectivity, car-free zones and an environmentally conscious approach that promotes excellent air quality and minimal noise and light pollution,” the article said.
The authors point out that Helsinki’s urban planning policy prioritizes pedestrian-friendly areas and efficient transport, which allows residents and visitors to navigate easily:
“Large car-free zones have transformed the neighborhood into a haven of clean air and peace.”
At the same time, the city encourages those who own vehicles to use electric models, which further reduces emissions. But what makes Helsinki a truly great city is an extensive network of multimodal public transport.
“From buses, trams and metro lines to commuter trains and ferries, every corner of the Helsinki region is accessible. Residents living far from the city center have the same level of mobility as those living in the city center. The network is fully integrated with the reliable national railway the system of Finland, which allows convenient travel around the country,” the publication writes.
According to the authors, the convenient application for planning trips combines all types of transport, making navigation simple and effective. And Helsinki’s commitment to sustainable development reflects the policies of the Scandinavian countries, where public transport is designed to minimize the impact on the environment.
