The corresponding decision was made in the interests of national security.
According to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the corresponding decision was made in the interests of national security and international partners were informed about it in the established manner.
“We have stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made a decision to abandon Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU foresees exactly what Ukraine did today,” – Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko emphasized.
Since January 1, the gas transportation system of Ukraine has been operating in a mode of no transit of Russian gas. As it is added, the infrastructure of the gas transportation system was prepared in advance for functioning in the mode of zero transit and reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
Stopping transit of Russian gas through UkraineThe other day, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, complained to the EU leaders about the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, because of the stoppage of transit of Russian gas. According to him, Kyiv was offered other gas transit options besides the Russian one, but Zelensky rejected these proposals as well.
As Reuters writes, stopping the transit will have significant geopolitical significance.
“Moscow has lost its dominant share of gas supplies to European Union countries in favor of competitors such as the United States, Qatar and Norway. … For Europe, the loss of supplies of cheap Russian gas has led to a significant economic downturn, a spike in inflation and an increase in the cost of living,” – explained in the article.
