Former football player of Shakhtar Sergey Popov told how he was robbed during the match of the Ukrainian national team in the USA:
Unfortunately, yes. We had an unpleasant incident: I and several other guys from the team were robbed there. This spoiled the mood and became, perhaps, the only really negative episode of that trip to the USA.
– What exactly was stolen from you?
– Money. In San Diego, we left them in the room when we went to the game against Mexico (on October 20, 1993, our national team lost to Mexico 2:1). While we were gone, the hotel staff “cleaned” our pockets, leaving only one dollar each – probably as some kind of symbolic gesture.
