Former first racket of the world Naomi Osaka (WTA 17) withdrew from the 2026 Australian Open.

On January 24, the Japanese woman was supposed to play against Madison Inglis (WTA 168), but the meeting never took place.

“I had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the tournament in order to deal with a problem that required attention with my body after the last match. I was so inspired to keep performing and this tournament meant so much to me, so to have to stop right now breaks my heart. But I can’t risk and make the situation worse if I want to get back on the court.

Thank you all for your love and support – I am infinitely grateful to everyone who supported me so warmly. And a special thank you to my entire team for always being on my side, as well as to the organizers of the tournament for their kindness and understanding.”

Osaka in Melbourne managed to pass Antonia Ružych and Soran Kirstya. In 2019 and 2021, she won the Australian Open trophy.

Inglis will compete in the fourth round of the slam against world number two Iga Sveontek.
