Since the usual groups were cancelled. Each participating team now has to play eight games against different opponents – four at home and four away. The results are fixed in the general group of all 36 teams, where the final participants of the play-off round are determined.
So, the first 8 teams of the rating get directly to the 1/8. Instead, the teams ranked from 9 to 24 go to the elimination round, where they will compete in a two-match format for a place in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League. Another important point – from now on, teams from the Champions League cannot enter the Europa League, as it was before. All teams ranked from 24th to 36th leave the European Cup season.
One of the reasons why the new format of the Champions League was introduced is that the matches themselves will now be more – if earlier there were 125 matches during the season, now this number has increased to 189. In addition, the number of matches of “top” teams will increase. If earlier they met more often at the play-off stage, now the same “PSG” will play both “Bavaria” and “Manchester City” at the initial stage.
Ukrainian clubs in the Champions LeagueWe will remind that Shakhtar Donetsk will be the only representative of the Champions League from Ukraine this year. Already on September 18, he will play his first match in the Champions League against Bologna.
