  • Higgins reacts after extending three-year trophy droughtJohn Higgins has opened up on his frustration after losing the British Open final to Mark Selby, extending his trophy drought to three years with his last victory at a ranking tournament in 2021.

He said: “Mark was too good. He put on a clinic tonight. It’s been an amazing run. I was just disappointed. The 10th frame I had the balls at my mercy to make it 5-5.

“There are certain points in matches and that’s when I gave it away. Mark got stronger and stronger. He’s Mark Selby.

“That’s what he does. I’ve loved being in a final again. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I’m just a bit disappointed with the final session because I didn’t bring anywhere near a good enough game to compete with Mark.

“I’m proud I’m still trying to compete with these guys. You’ve got to bring a higher level to win finals and I don’t know if I’ve got it.”

  • Star asks Selby to let him off £20 betSnooker star Mark Selby has revealed that a fellow player owes him £20 after he won a bet.

The four-time world champion is into the semi-final at the British Open after beating David Gilbert 5-4.

He held on for the win despite a spirited comeback from 4-1 down by the man nicknamed The Angry Farmer.

Both Leicestershire-born players are close pals and Selby shared what his mate said to him about a recent bet they had.

He told ITV: “I don’t make it easy for myself. It’s just about getting the win, whether it’s 5-0 or 5-4.

“I got a bit nervy towards the end, although Dave played very well from 4-1 to 4-4. I thought I was not going to get a chance, but he was unlucky in the last frame.

“We practised together before the English Open – we had four best of sevens, each for £5. I won all of them so he owes me £20.”

  • Selby pays classy tribute to Higgins after finalMark Selby sent a classy message to John Higgins following his victory in the British Open.

Selby, 41, emerged victorious in his match with Higgins to secure the £100,000 jackpot.

Speaking after the win, Selby said: “Winning any tournament nowadays is special because the standard is so tough. To beat John in a final I knew I had to play the top of my game and I did.

“When I had my chances I took them. I’ve got so much respect for John. He’s one of the all-time greats. I relish the moment playing him because he’s an absolute legend.

“I dug in this week. There were a couple of games where it was tough. There are always matches you manage to scrape through and I’ve managed to do that.”

  • O’Sullivan hints World Snooker Championship should leave CrucibleRonnie O’Sullivan believes it could make sense for the World Snooker Championships to leave the Crucible.

The iconic Sheffield venue has hosted the tournament for the last 47 years.

But in recent years there has been debate over whether it should be moved, with some suggesting it has become too small and outdated for snooker’s number one event.

The Crucible is contracted to host the World Snooker Championships until 2027 but after that it could be taken around the world according to snooker chief Barry Hearn, who claimed that ultimately money talks.

O’Sullivan, 48, has revealed he would not be opposed to such plans as he always enjoys the treatment he receives when playing in tournaments abroad, and thinks his fellow players feel the same way.

Asked if the tournament should leave the Crucible, The Rocket told talkSPORT: “If it makes sense, we play some tournaments in China and Saudi Arabia and the players loved it. They got treated well and looked after well.”
