According to MatchVision, it was this company that developed the hybrid competition system – the so-called league phase (league phase), or the POT System format, which has been applied in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League since the 2024/25 season.
MatchVision claims to have registered the copyright for the format in Chile in 2006, and repeatedly presented the idea to UEFA in 2013. However, only 11 years later, the format was introduced without proper approval or license. MatchVision requires UEFA to recognize its involvement in the creation of the format, invite relevant representatives to its events and enter into a commercial agreement with MatchVision.
In turn, UEFA states that the allegations are unsubstantiated or baseless. The new format of the Champions League provides that the 36 clubs are not divided into classic groups, but play in a single mode of the league with 8 matches (4 at home, 4 away) against different opponents. Also, the Swiss system involves a computer drawing of opponents instead of the traditional drawing of balls.
The total amount of compensation in MatchVision’s lawsuit against UEFA is 20 million euros, in addition, Leandro Chara is demanding 200 thousand euros of compensation personally.
