Cherchesov was asked a question in Kazakh at a press conference after the Nations League match on October 13, in which Kazakhstan lost 1-0 to Slovenia. He noticed that the journalist was wearing the uniform of the French club “Paris Saint-Germain” and asked in response: “Do you speak French now?” After that, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Kazakhstan demanded an explanation from the Football Federation.
The football federation noted that the fine was imposed within the framework of ethical regulations. “Cherchesov’s humor, of course, goes beyond the limits. I personally talked with him, explained the relevance and priority of the state language. We had a conversation and work with him,” said head of the federation Adlet Barmenkulov.
Stanislav Cherchesov was the head coach of the Russian national football team from 2016 to 2021. He also led the national team during the World Cup in Russia in 2018, during which it showed one of the best results in its history – the Russians reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to the future finalists Croatia on penalties.
After being dismissed from the post of coach of the Russian national team, Cherchesov worked in the Polish “Legia” and the Hungarian “Ferencvaros”, and in June 2024 he headed the Kazakhstan national football team. At one of the first press conferences, he was asked a question in Kazakh, to which Cherchesov then said: “Can I answer you in Ossetian?” After the press conference following the match with Slovenia and outraged by Cherchesov’s words, the Football Federation of Kazakhstan explained that he “has great respect for the Kazakh language” and “actively teaches” it, but the coach’s teacher said that they had only had one lesson so far.
