But things got tense when Casemiro was also shown a red card just before halftime, giving Chelsea a way back into the game.
In the second half, Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back for Chelsea, but United held on for the win.
Amorim’s big victory came with a bit of controversy, though.
The pitch at Old Trafford was flooded due to heavy rain, and Amorim’s technical area was nearly underwater.
Despite the conditions, the Portuguese boss was often seen stepping out of his box and even standing ahead of his counterpart on the touchline.
While Premier League managers are usually warned if they leave their technical area, the rule appeared to be ignored for Amorim because of the awful weather.
Speaking after the match, Amorim said: “We started well, really aggressive.

“The sending off helped, but we still made it hard for ourselves. We needed to be more clinical.”
The win lifted United into the top half of the table with seven points. They’ll look to keep the momentum going next Saturday against Brentford.

Manchester United have largely struggled under the Portuguese manager, but this could be the turning point of the season.
Amorim was delighted to pick up a win amid mounting pressure on him and his squad, but he is aware it means little if they cannot back it up.
He warned his squad after the match, saying: “Now it’s time to create a bit of momentum.
“We deserved the win, it’s just one win. And we need to think about the next one.
“It’s really important because I understand the environment around the team and the coach. This game was really important for that.
“It’s Manchester United winning a game at home, it’s just that. Three points. It’s trying to create the momentum.
“We cannot forget that we suffer a lot when we are not in the top, in our maximum in all aspects. We can lose against Grimsby, we can win against any team. We need to take that for the next week.
“Of course it’s really good to win, you can feel the environment in the dressing room.
“But forget that feeling. I prefer the other feeling now, because it will bring us the urgency to win again. That is really important again.”
