In the final round, Vasyl Ivanchuk from Lviv played against the tournament leader from Lithuania, Paulus Pultinevichius, who was only half a point behind him. In case of victory, Ivanchuk became the champion. But our maestro, having an extra pawn in a simple endgame, ran out of time. The unfortunate defeat relegated Ivanchuk to 5th place, and the Lithuanian sensationally became the first.
Ivanchuk’s first reaction when he realized that he had run out of time
Ihor Kovalenko from Kyiv, if he had won in the final round against Georgian Levan Pantsulai, would have risen to second place. But our compatriot gave in and, as a result, finished 13th, while his opponent won silver.
Among our other participants, we would like to note the FIDE master Vitaly Promyshlyansky, who, having a starting rating of 118, took 42nd place and added 61 points to the rating.
